Wellington Grammar School: the Farewell Event
A last chance for Old Boys to say "Goodbye" before the bulldozers move in.
Radio Shropshire:
Radio Shropshire has confirmed its intention to record a broadcast piece, preferably from the school. Unfortunately we were unable to have this done before end of term (19/07). A preliminary publicity piece may be considered, and as time is not an issue the onsite broadcast will be recorded in the new term.

Ercall Wood:
We have the full support of all staff and the Board of Governors of Ercall Wood School.
They have stressed they are keen to hold such an event in order to "... respect and celebrate the considerable influence the old school had on so many lives".
I couldn't have put it better!

Meeting:
An initial meeting was held on 20th July in order to discuss ideas and establish some "shape" for the event.
Eleven interested parties were in attendance and there was lively, interesting consideration of many matters relevant at this early stage. Summary below:
Meeting: Dun Cow, Trench; 20/07/12: 19.30
As the present school buildings should be in use until 2014, time is not a pressing issue, although it would be preferable to have our event in place before commencement of major construction works on the site. Those present at the meeting were all agreed that our event should take place at a relaxed time in the school calendar, with June/July, 2013 generally favoured.
Clearly a firm structure for the event cannot be set without consultation with the present school's staff, and that will take place early in the new school year.
In the meantime, it was generally agreed that the event should begin with a light informal buffet lunch - or "brunch" - followed by a short anecdotal presentation in hall, after which attendees will be free to wander around the old school.
It was also generally agreed that there should be an "exit donation" in order to cover catering and ancillary costs of staging the event. As regards funding however, we will also approach Wellington Town Council who may see fit to make a grant if the event can be seen seen to be of educational value to present-day students.
Memorabilia will hopefully play a big part in the event. Subject to School approval, we would like to set aside a classroom in which to display photographs, reports, rule books and any other memorabilia of WGS which is available. Not only could such items be statically displayed, there could also be a rolling "Power Point" projection of the copied images in hall throughout the day.
Obviously, Old Boys would be extremely unwilling to part with such materials even for a short period of time, but if they would be prepared to make copies for exhibition that would be ideal.
On the point of anecdotes and school memories, local historian and Old Boy, Allan Frost, has prepared a brief questionnaire which will appear on this site shortly and hopefully be emailed individually. If OB's would just take a few minutes to complete and return it, the forms will be extremely useful in compiling an anecdotal presentation.
Spreading the word is still vitally important, and several attendees made the point that there are many OB's without regular Internet access. If we could all make a point of keeping these chaps aware it would be helpful, especially to them.
Aside from the event itself, great concern was expressed about the existence and/or whereabouts of various school artifacts, such as the Honours Boards from the dining hall. We will continue to ask for local media support on this, but if anyone can shed any light on such matters, please make it known via this site.
Overall, we have a strong project which, if support received so far persists, is in such demand that we can not only have a superb reunion event in the accepted sense, but we can do it with a style and panache befitting the Grammar.
Depending on the degree of involvement of present-day students, we may even make a statement or two!
I think that's a reasonable precis of the main points covered in the meeting. My thanks to all who attended.
Please let me know what memorabilia you may be able to make available, whether in original or copied form. We may have time on our side, but it does take a lot of time and effort to collate and organise such material. I'd also like to hear about any other ideas you may have, and any ways in which you may be able to contribute to the event.
That brings me to a final point which I make elsewhere on site and which I raised at the meeting to no avail. We may have media friendly to our project, but when it comes to the "social media" we're sadly lacking! If anyone is adept at using the likes of "Facebook", "Twitter", "Friends Reunited" and "LinkedIn", please will you use your skills to publicise the event and this website? Let me know what you're doing and I'll report it on site.
Thank you to everyone for continued support. The ball is well and truly rolling now!
